Frequently Asked Questions

What age can learners be assessed?

Latest guidance (SASC, 2025) recommend waiting until at least 8 years of age. The reason for this is that some young children develop at a different rate, and it is important to rule out developmental immaturity or other issues (medical, etc) prior to diagnosing dyslexia.

Can you identify other difficulties?

Specific learning difficulties is a general term and may include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dysgraphia, ADHD, ASD, speech and/or language difficulties. I am able to identify but not diagnose co-occurring difficulties and can make suggestions for support and when appropriate recommend referral to the relevant specialist.

Does an assessment also result in a diagnosis?

At times it may not be possible to offer a clear-cut diagnosis of dyslexia, however, the comprehensive report will note areas of strengths and weaknesses with detailed recommendations to support your child at home, in school and with a specialist teacher. If necessary, details of other professionals will be given or onward referral, such as occupational therapist, behavioural specialist, optometrist or speech and language therapists.

How much does the assessment cost?

The total cost of the assessment and report is £560.00. £50.00 non-refundable deposit is required on booking.

£200.00 due 5 days before the assessment day, and the balance paid within 14 days of the assessment. Please note I am unable to forward the report unless full payment has been made. Payment made be made via BACS or by cheque.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel?

If you are unable to make the assessment for any reason, please let me know as soon as possible. If a cancellation is made within 4 days of the assessment date a £100.00 cancellation fee will be charged.

I reserve the right to cancel or reschedule assessments, without penalty or liability, for reasons outside my control. Should this situation arise, I will try to notify you as reasonably as possible and will offer alternative assessment dates, or refund any fees paid for the cancelled assessment.

How can I ensure my child gets help in exams?

Access Arrangements are reasonable adjustments used in class and during exams. They aim to place the learner on a level with their peers giving them fair access to exams and the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding to achieve their full potential. They do not give the learner an unfair advantage or undermine the integrity of the exam paper. Access Arrangements are ultimately the school’s responsibility as is the decision to decide what access arrangements to apply for.

Within the diagnostic report, access arrangements will be recommended for the school to consider. These are based on quantitative and qualitative evidence gained during the assessment session and will help you to know what your child is eligible for.

Can I stay with my child during the assessment?

I ask that parents/carers stay for the duration of the assessment for safeguarding purposes, however, please do not bring siblings/other children, they can be a little distracting!

How should I explain the assessment to my child?

You can tell your child that the assessment is a chance to find out how they learn best. It’s not a test they can pass or fail — it’s simply to help adults understand how to make learning easier and more enjoyable for them.
